“Blog-able” information

With everyone under the sun having a blog, a MySpace page, a Facebook page, and a Twitter account to spread information around the interweb, I’m wondering why people put so much information there.  Well not really so much, but the content of the information is really what alarms me.

I  mean not only do I NOT need to know that you’re enjoying drinking a wine in the hamoc on Saturday, or that your plane arrived 15 minutes late in Stockholm, or that your cat just farted, or that the commerical interupted your movie right at the best part.  But think about that kind of information that you’re posting.  What does that really tell people?  Especially prospective clients, your neighbors, your business associates, the policemen, the firemen, and even the criminal living across the street.

Do you really want the burgular that has been eyeing your neighborhood to know that you’re away on business?

And let’s not forget that in this day and age that Google, Yahoo, and 50 other search engines are recording EVERYTHING you write in those web places for anyone with a smal desire to know about you to find.

Yes, I have a blog - DOH, you’re reading it - but I do not put every minute detail of my life into it.  There is a thing called privacy that I believe in.  I don’t want people to know how many times I shower or brush my teeth.  I don’t really think people want to know exactly how my mood is today.

This blog is a place for me to pass out information that I feel is intresting, or to talk about events that I’m proud of, or to gripe about things that really upset me.  Mostly it’s a place for me to talk about things that intrerest me - computers, video games, my family and my faith.  Yes there is enough information in those categories for you to get to know me.  But if I want to talk to you about pretty much anything else, I’ll probably speek to you in person about it.  After all face to face conversations are better than blog-tag anyway.

Vista, Office 2007 and Changes. Oh my!

Windows XP is no longer being supported by Microsoft (unless you purchase a support plan), Windows 7 is coming this Christmas, and hardware vendors (mainly computer manufacturers) are slowly removing drivers, offerings and options for XP.  Does this sound like a hint to you???

It certainly does to me and I’ve convinced my management that it’s a hint we can not ignore.

Beginning this month, I’ve got to plan the deployment of Vista across my company.  Doesn’t sound too complicated?  Well, think about what this actually entails.

1). Program Compatibility Testing - we use a lot of small “need to have” utilities that have their roots in DOS - in fact some of them only have a pretty face on a true DOS application.  Vista won’t like these apps.

2). Hardware Upgrades - Vista needs horsepower - and lots of it.  Fully 80% of the machines that my company currently has running XP will not run Vista to a satisfactory level.

3). Major Application Upgrades - The current versions of Office and AutoCAD will be upgraded.  Office because we want the new features, AutoCAD because we have to.

4). User Training - All of the above (excluding the hardware) will require my users to learn SOMETHING new or change the way that they currently do things.

Yeah, I’ve got my work cut out for me over the next 6-9 months.  Please begin praying for me now.
